ARTS 219 - Painted Light: Interpreting the Landscape

FDR: HA Fine Arts Distribution
Credits: 4

Lab fee required. Prerequisite: ARTS 217. This course begins with the introduction of en plein air , a French expression which means “in the open air” and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors. We examine artists who have worked en plein air , past and present, study their work and methods, and then apply this knowledge to painting outdoors. Emphasis is on the way light and color define form and space. Students build on their knowledge of color theory through observation and implementation. Beginning with the concept of plein air, we quickly branch out to more interpretive and subjective uses of the landscape in painting, resulting in a cohesive body of work.
