LAW 419P - Sports Law Practicum. This course will focus on legal issues arising in the professional and amateur sports contexts. Two texts will be used: Gerald Williams, Negotiations, and Matthew Mitten, et al, Sports Law and Regulation: Cases, Materials and Problems. In the professional sports component of the course, students will be expected to negotiate and draft a mock contract (and related materials) for a professional athlete or coach. In the negotiations, one student will represent management or the institution and another student will represent the coach or player. Students will also evaluate their own negotiations style and performance, as well as evaluating the student who represents the other side in the negotiations process. In the amateur sports component of the course, students will analyze a current issue, prepare a memorandum regarding the issue, and a draft of proposed legislation to deal with the issue. Students will also be expected to prepare one-page responses to each assignment given during the class.Five hours.SmithNot offered in 2011-2012.
