ROML 297 - Spring Term Abroad in Romance Languages

A spring-term abroad topics course in which the language of instruction is English, while students also study the language of the host country (French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese). The course topic is an intensive cultural study related to one of the societies that speak Romance Languages, with an emphasis on experiential learning. May be repeated for degree credit if the topics are different.

Topic for Spring 2012:

ROML 297-01:The Other Europe: Minorities and Migrations (4). Prerequisite: FREN 112 or equivalent. The objective of this course is to enable students to gain a better understanding of multicultural societies in Europe, including the factors encouraging migration within Europe and the economic and social challenges for traditional national, regional, ethnic, linguistic and religious groups. During the first three weeks, while in Strasbourg, students take French conversation in the morning appropriate to their level of proficiency. The rest of the course is composed of lectures, readings, discussions, and site visits, all conducted in English, and related to contemporary issues of migration and policies regarding religious and ethnic minorities (Jews, Muslims, Protestants, Roma) in Europe.
