HIST-395-01: Consumer Culture in Europe, 1650-1900 (3). Prerequisite: Junior or senior history majors. This course studies the history of consumer practices and material culture from the 16th century to the 19th century. During this period, Europeans underwent what is called a “consumer revolution,” as individuals began buying more and entered the marketplace in new ways. Topics include new patterns of international trade and colonization, the shift away from self-sufficient production to market-based consumption, the debate over luxury, the politics of spending, and the rise of mass consumption in the nineteenth century.
