HIST 289 - Topics in Asian, African, or Islamic History

A course offered from time to time depending on student interest and staff availability, on a selected topic or problem in Asian or African history. May be repeated for degree credit with permission and if the topics are different.

Topic for Winter 2012:

HIST-289-01: West Africa: A Thousand Years (3). Survey of West African history, examining the region both on its own terms and as a part of world history. Topics include the empires of Mali and Songhay, the trans-Atlantic slave trade and West Africa’s role in the Atlantic world, the transition to “legitimate” trade and the West African contribution to industrialization in Europe, the colonial era and African adaptation, and the era of independent African nation-states.
