HIST-289-01: West Africa: A Thousand Years (3). Survey of West African history, examining the region both on its own terms and as a part of world history. Topics include the empires of Mali and Songhay, the trans-Atlantic slave trade and West Africa’s role in the Atlantic world, the transition to “legitimate” trade and the West African contribution to industrialization in Europe, the colonial era and African adaptation, and the era of independent African nation-states.
