ENGN 395 - Special Topics in Engineering Credits: 3 Planned Offering: Offered when interest is expressed and departmental resources permit.
Prerequisite: Junior standing. Advanced work in solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, or materials science. Topics selected based on student interest. May be repeated for a maximum of six credits with permission and if the topics are different.
Winter 2011 topic:
ENGN 395: Theory of Structures (3). Prerequisite: C- or better in ENGN 301. This course is designed to provide a solid background in the analysis of simple structures. Students learn the traditional hand-based solution techniques ssential for calculating deflections and design loads needed in future design courses. It focuses on two aspects of structural analysis: the theory behind the analysis methods as well as problem solution techniques. Students learn to apply the concepts of equilibrium, compatibility, and linear material behavior to structural problems. Ramniceanu.
