Poverty and Human Capability Studies minor

Students weave together poverty-related courses across campus (economics, education, law, philosophy, politics, sociology, and more) and hands-on service and internship experiences across the county, the country, and the world to supplement their major areas of study. Those pursuing a minor in poverty studies also undertake capstone research projects that connect their concerns about poverty and inequality with their future civic and professional lives.

In meeting the requirements of this interdisciplinary minor, a student must use at least nine credits not also used to meet the requirements of any other major or minor.

Capstone

Students must complete a capstone study that culminates in a major research project on a topic proposed by the student that focuses on poverty, social inequality, and human capability. Most minors will take POV 423 . Others may petition to substitute for their capstone an independent study, honors thesis, capstone in another major or minor, or a relevant research project from a POV related course. These substitutes must be approved by the director of the Shepherd Program and co-advised by Shepherd Program faculty.
