Music (MUS)

Department of Music facilities include a concert hall, a small ensemble rehearsal hall, a composition/recording studio, a music theory lab / piano lab, a listening lab, numerous practice rooms, and classrooms equipped with the latest technology. The department offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in music as well as a minor in music. Courses in theory, composition, conducting, music education, music technology, and music history are available, as well as instruction in piano, voice, orchestral strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, harp, classical guitar, acoustic guitar, jazz improvisation, and choral and instrumental ensembles. Through the Concert Guild, a classical music series, and Sonoklect, a modern music series, the department makes numerous professional concerts available to the University community each year.

Note: Limits of ten credits in ensemble courses (MUS 108-116) and of nine credits for non-majors and 12 credits for majors from applied music courses (MUS 141, 241, 341, 441) allowable toward a degree. Credits taken in excess of these limits will be treated as repeats of the earliest unrepeated credit of each kind. A fee is charged for applied music; music majors are entitled to take one applied music course per term without charge. One credit is earned for ten 45-minute private lessons and a minimum of five hours practice a week during fall and winter terms and for eight 55-minute private lessons; and a minimum of five hours practice a week during the spring term.

CPD 451, Career and Professional Development Summer Internship (1 credit), is available to those students who desire academic credit for a summer internship in music.
