AFCA 287 - Bitter Grapes: Slavery, The History of Wine and Black Literature and Culture in South Africa Prerequisite: Instructor consent. Credits: 4
This is an innovative, interdisciplinary course offered for 4 credits during the Spring Term 2026. The course is designed to explore the complex interplay between the history of wine and winemaking and its broader socio-cultural implications within South Africa, particularly focusing on the historical context of slavery in Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Throughout this course, students will go on excursions that engage with both the technical aspects of viticulture and oenology and the rich cultural, historical, and economic narratives that shape not only South Africa’s winemaking industry but also other aspects of the unchained legacy of slavery there. The course offers a deep dive into Africana studies through readings, films, and argumentative writing and speaking, in particular, allowing students to understand the lasting impacts of slavery and how they intertwine with contemporary issues in South Africa. Students will explore significant works of Black literature and culture, participate in discussions/debates, and engage in community service that reflects the themes of the course. The course is particularly suited for students interested in the intersections of history, culture, and social justice, and will equip them with skills of cultural appreciation and critical reflection.
