Black Americans of all social class statuses have a long history within the United States, this course focuses specifically on those who are considered the Black Middle Class and the Black Elite. Drawing from a sociological perspective, we interrogate questions about who are the Black Middle Class and Black Elite? We attempt to answer these questions from classical texts from sociology about social class and race, as well as incorporate readings from Black studies. We conclude the semester with contemporary texts that attempt to explain the experiences of the current Black Elite.
