PHYS 102 - Physics and Perception of Music


MUS 102 FDR: SL Lab Science Distribution
Credits: 4

Laboratory course with fee. Appropriate for non-science and non-major students with a high-school knowledge of physics and mathematics. Same as MUS 102. Explores physical principles of sound production and music perception. Hands-on investigation is emphasized. Topics include: wave properties and propagation, harmonic series and spectral analysis, tuning temperaments, response of the human ear, auditory processing, room acoustics, audio recording and reproduction technologies, characterization of various instrument families (strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, and voice).
