DANC 390 - Special Topics


Credits: 3 in fall or winter, 4 in spring
Planned Offering: Offered in fall or winter when interest is expressed and departmental resource permit.



Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor.An advanced studio course for experienced dancers exploring various choreographic styles and methods and the intersections between technique, aesthetics and creative collaboration. This course permits the student to follow a program of specialized applied research in order to widen the scope of experience and to build upon concepts covered in other courses. The course culminates in a performance piece for presentation. May be repeated for degree credit with permission if the topics are different.

Topic for Spring 2011:

DANC 390: Special Topics: Aerial Dance (4). Prerequisites: Instructor’s consent. This course examines a unique array of concepts and techniques from across the fine, performing and media arts in the creation of an interdisciplinary aerial dance performance. Students work with a diverse array of  experimental approaches that integrate music, video, film, painting, photography or any other art form specific to their desires and relate it to a given theme (this year, the theme of honor and integrity) in collaboration with aerial dance. Class meetings include lecture and studio work during the day and research / rehearsals in the evenings, in addition to regular weekly critique and individual sessions. The course culminates in a collaborative, interdisciplinary aerial performance work. (HA) Davies.

Topic for Fall 2010:

DANC 390: Special Topics: Dance Lab (3). This course is a combination of theory and practical work centered on the educational methods and practices of teaching dance to young people. The class meets weekly to discuss the elements of designing dance courses, teaching dance, creating a budget, marketing and basic elements of running a dance-based business. Additional nightly sessions are arranged by the class in order to teach dance classes to the local community. Davies.
