CBSC 298 - Topical Seminar in Cognitive and Behavioral Science

Credits: 3 credits in fall and winter, 4 in spring. Prerequisites vary, determined at time of offering. Seminar topics vary with instructor and term. These topical seminars are designed to introduce students to an area of current interest in the field of psychology. Students receive an overview of the research and/or applied practices that have advanced an area of psychological science. May be repeated for degree credit if the topics are different.

Fall 2020, CBSC 298A-01: Topical Seminar in Cognitive and Behavioral Science: Learning and Memory (3). Prerequisite: CBSC/PSYC 110 or 111. Prerequisite or corequisite: CBSC/PSYC 250 or BIOL 201. This course includes elements of lecture and seminar in a consideration of research from humans and animals to explore a systems basis of learning and memory in humans to understand current behavioral and cognitive theories about how we learn (encode), store, and retrieve (remember) information and knowledge. Students study the influences of emotion and social constructs on learning and memory, neurobiological differences in behavioral versus substance addictions, and the study of learning and memory across the lifespan from childhood development through aging and dementia. Fall 2020, CBSC 298B-01: Topical Seminar in Cognitive and Behavioral Science: Community Psychology (3). An introduction to the field of community psychology, an area of psychology that examines the reciprocal relationships between individuals and their communities and focuses on the application of psychological solutions to social problems. Students will learn about the history, values, theory, and research that characterize community psychology, and consider the ways in which a community psychology lens can be applied to W&L, Lexington, and Rockbridge County.
