FREN 343 - La France à travers les siècles

Credits: 3 Prerequisite: Three courses at the 200 level. Readings in French literature and civilization from across the centuries. May be repeated for degree credit if the topic is different.

Fall 2020, FREN 343A-01: Amour et humour dans la littérature française à travers les siècles (3). Prerequisites: French 164. A multi genre, multidisciplinary incursion into French works of literature and performance arts that explore the many facets of love while simultaneously making use of aesthetic strategies of humor, comedic languages, and irony. The readings span from early modern epic writings such as Aucassin et Nicolette, to classical plays by Molière, to pre-revolutionary prose, poetry and theater by authors such as Marivaux and Beaumarchais, to modern and contemporary works of prose or drama by Colette or Yasmina Reza to films by Francois Goddard and contemporary romantic comedies such as Gemma Bovary or Love is in the Air. Theories of humor, comedy and performance art are woven with the reading of the primary texts. Radulescu. FDR: HL
