LAW 316 - Innocence Project Course.


Students represent incarcerated Virginia clients convicted of serious felonies who have a claim of actual innocence. Work includes reviewing court pleadings, interviewing inmates, witnesses and prior counsel, and in appropriate cases litigating claims of actual innocence in court. A weekly classroom component allows students to brainstorm about their cases and will cover topics relevant to innocence claims including the statutory framework; issues surrounding false confessions; witness misidentification; Brady claims; police and prosecutorial misconduct; etc.  This is a two semester, two credit course with additional credit of up to two hours in fulfillment of the third year service requirement. Class open to selected third year students through an application process.
