ARTS 297 - Special Topics in Studio Art

FDR: HA
Credits: 1 or 3

Prerequisite: ARTS 111 or instructor consent. In various years the topics and media change, given the interest of the faculty and presence of visiting artists. May be repeated when topics are different. Lab fee required.

Winter 2019, ARTS 297A-01: Special Topics: Art, Culture, and Mixed Media (3). Prerequisite: Instructor consent. This course is for students participating in ARTS 213: Drawing Italy in Spring 2019. An interdisciplinary course combining making art with the study of the Italian culture and language. Students study/practice Italian, providing basic language skills to aid in understanding and communicating abroad. In the studio–a hybrid of drawing and painting with a focus on color and mixed media–students strengthen their observational skills while simultaneously learning about the fundamental properties of pastel and acrylic, both individually and through mixed media approaches. Students work from life as well as non-objectively, to explore a wide range of expression. The course reviews the color wheel; achromatic and monochromatic color, analogous colors, complimentary colors, warm and cool color relationships, local color and natural light vs. color as light. The final third of the course is devoted to creating a series that steers students for work in Italy in the spring. (HA). Olson-Janjic.
