SOC 305 - Power and Society Credits: 3 Planned Offering: Winter 2014 and alternate years
No prerequisite. ANTH 101 or SOC 102 recommended. An analysis of the concept of power is followed by an examination of the distribution and exercise of power in hunting and gathering, agrarian, industrial, and post-industrial societies. Special attention is devoted to the neo-Marxist, elitist, and pluralist accounts of power in American society and their implications for social stratification.
