REL 203 - Modern Disenchantment and the Possibilities for Re-Enchantment

FDR: HU
Credits: 3
Scholars interested in the meaning of modernity have long used the category “disenchantment” to characterize how the modern west interprets God, Self, and World. But is this still a good way to understand how these are experienced? The first half of the course is dedicated to a sociological, a philosophical, and a theological account of God, Self, and World in the context of modern disenchantment. The second half considers challenges to the disenchantment hypothesis by exploring contemporary accounts of science and technology, art and culture, ethics and society, and theology. Kosky.
