Prerequisite: Varies by topic. Selected studies in music with a focus on history and culture, non-classical genres, ethnomusicological topics, or performance. May be repeated for degree credit if the topics are different.
Spring 2013 topic:
MUS 296: Spring-Term Topic in Music: Bitches Brew: Miles Davis and the Birth of Jazz-Rock Fusion. (4). This course is an intensive exploration of the musical genre known as jazz-rock fusion. Particular attention is given to Miles Davis, including his landmark recording of the late 1960s and 1970s, as well as the first jazz-rock groups founded by Davis’s sidemen: Weather Report, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Mwandishi, and Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters. This course is listening intensive and includes a research project on the subject, but the ability to read music is not required. (HA) McKinley. Spring 2013
