Prerequisites: FREN 273 or instructor consent. This course gives students a general knowledge of the evolution of French literature and ideas over the centuries through the study of one main theme. Recent offerings include: L’Exil; Regards sur la ville; Le dépaysement; Le voyage dans la literature française; L’esprit critique au XVIIIe siècle.

FREN 331: Etudes thématiques:The French Uncanny (3). Prerequisites: FREN 273 or instructor consent. This course investigates the aesthetic of the “uncanny” in French and Francophone film, literature, and theory from the Renaissance to 21st century. Key works include Freud’s essay on “The Uncanny,” Kundera’s Ignorance, Cocteau’s La Belle et la Bête, Derrida’s Monolinguisme de l’autre, Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams, and Scorsese’s Hugo. Focus on uncanniness in representations of France, the French language, the foreigner, and the Other. Required film screening on Tuesday evenings. (HL) Chenoweth.
