ARTH 180: FS: Portraits, Politics, and Propaganda (3). First-year seminar. In this seminar, students examine the most common form of self-commemoration -¬ the portrait -¬ from a variety of intellectual perspectives. Motives for commissions, specific themes, and symbolic messages, and even stylistic choices are addressed as we trace the evolution of this highly charged art form from its origins in Antiquity through the modern period and the development of the camera.
