ARTS 2502 - Handbuilding Clay Sculpture

FDR: Fine Arts (HA)
Credits: 4

In this hand building ceramics course, we will explore the fundamentals of creating sculptural works using manual and hand craft techniques for clay. Through instruction in hand and tool modelling, pinch pot, coils, slab construction, and joining techniques, you will develop a deep understanding of form, texture, and surface design. We will explore how elements of design can become core aspects of making clay sculpture. The course emphasizes craftsmanship and creativity, encouraging you to experiment with shaping clay into unique, expressive forms while practicing essential techniques for building, joining, molding, and finishing your work to successfully prepare pieces for kiln firing. You will gain material knowledge of clay’s properties and techniques while preparing pieces for firing and glazing. We will observe and explore both contemporary and traditional sculptural transformations of clay, and you will be encouraged to respond to these examples in your own work.
