REL 2075 - God and the Holocaust

FDR: Humanities (HU)
Credits: 3

This course considers the impassioned responses to the Holocaust using a variety of sources: autobiography and literature; philosophy and theology; and political and ethical analysis. How are we to make sense of the fact that such an atrocity not only could happen but did happen? Can we? This is a question for theological and religious thought, but it is also a question for all of us, regardless of religious commitments. A particular focus of the course will be on struggles to define observance, prayer, and communal political responsibility in the wake of the Holocaust, especially in Judaism but also beyond Judaism in other religious and secular forms of thinking.
