LAW 735 - Virginia Law and Procedure Course Type: Upper Level Elective Credits: 3
Conditions: Although not mandatory, it would be helpful in terms of bar passage to take Core Skills as well if seats are available in that course. (Preference given to third-year students.) Description: This course will introduce students to Virginia civil procedure and the distinctive features of bringing and pursuing a civil action in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The course will focus on the proper jurisdiction and venue for an action, what claims can be asserted in a single lawsuit, who the proper parties may be, what entities are protected by immunity doctrines, Virginia motion practice, the limitations on discovery methods in Virginia, and the availability of appeals. Although not a mandatory class, this course introduces and discusses topics which likely will be tested on the Virginia bar exam.
