Description: In this course, we will examine the statutes, regulations, and common-law doctrines designed to protect consumers from unfair and deceptive corporate practices. The course will identify and analyze the roles of various federal, state, and private actors involved in promoting consumer protection and survey how the law applies to specific types of consumer transactions. The course will incorporate both legal doctrine and public policy as we discuss the relative merits and efficacy of various consumer-protection approaches. Students’ understanding of the material will be assessed through class participation, in-class presentations, and a final paper.
