Description: A study of the basic doctrines of federal and state antitrust law with emphasis on Sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Act and Section 7 of the Clayton Act. The course examines collusive arrangements among competitors and exclusionary agreements, exclusionary conduct by individual firms with substantial market power, and mergers between competitors adversely affecting competition, as well as the role of governments and private plaintiffs in enforcing the antitrust laws. The course emphasizes the economic and political policies underlying the antitrust laws, practical aspects of practicing antitrust law, and, because of its rapidly evolving nature, current developments in antitrust law. A study of basic doctrines of the federal antitrust laws. Attention will be paid to the political and economic theories that lie behind disputes about antitrust doctrine and policy.
