GR 395: Advanced Study of Greek Lyric Poetry (3). We read selections of early Greek lyric, iambic, and elegiac poetry from David Campbell¹s classic commentary with a focus on the language and literary elements of early Greek poetry. We also review the various rules of grammar and syntax learned in previous Greek courses as they appear in the poems. In addition, we read a few works of secondary scholarship to aid our discussions of lyric. Primary texts may include Archilochus, Sappho, Alcaeus, Tyrtaeus, Simonides, Bacchylides, and Pindar.
