LAW 431P - Refugee Protection Practicum This practicum will revolve around a partnership with Al Otro Lado (AoL), an organization that provides direct assistance to asylum seekers on the US-Mexico border in Tijuana. Each student in the practicum will receive one case referral from AoL to assist a client in preparing an asylum application remotely. Students will work under the direct supervision of the professor and in collaboration with the AoL legal team to prepare their client’s asylum applications. Class meetings will be dedicated to: (1) discussions about challenges to refugee protection in the US; (2) learning to interview clients and write persuasive refugee narratives through simulated assignments; and (3) case rounds for students to present their individual cases and receive feedback from their classmates. Students will develop skills and knowledge necessary to represent asylum seekers in the United States. Credits: 3. BaluartePrerequisite: Immigration Law (LAW 331) or instructor permission.
