Credits: 3 in fall or winter; 4 in spring A course offered from time to time depending on student interest and staff availability, on a selected topic or problem in Asian or African history. May be repeated for degree credit if the topics are different.

Fall 2020, HIST 289A-01: Topic: Ancient Eastern Empires (3). An introduction to the social and cultural history of the ancient empires that dominated the Fertile Crescent, part of the region we refer to as the Middle East: the Sumerians, the Egyptians, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, and the Persians. In the process, we encounter the various methods used in reconstructing and narrating this vast region’s history - especially drawing on archaeology and translated primary sources. What is the place of this region’s past in our own understanding of progress, technology, and civilization? How does that history connect with pressing contemporary issues such as antiquities law, cultural heritage disputes, and museums? (HU) Chalmers. FDR: HU
