LAW 402P - Rights of Prisoners Practicum.

In 2016, more than two million Americans were incarcerated.  This experiential, community-based course looks at the rights incarcerated individuals have while in prison, the means by which incarcerated individuals collaterally attack their convictions, and the legal challenges formerly incarcerated individuals face upon re-entry. Each student will draft a memorandum opinion in a prisoner civil rights or habeas case currently pending before the Western District of Virginia. In addition, each student will develop and give a presentation on a re-entry-related topic to incarcerated individuals at a correctional facility in the area. This course allows students to engage with community partners at Cold Springs Detention and Diversion Center and Harrisonburg Detention and Diversion Center and to help serve their mission of preparing incarcerated individuals for life outside of the correctional facility. Two hours. Weiss
