LAW 240 - Consumer Protection.

This course serves as an introduction to the consumer protection laws and regulations that modern businesses must follow when they provide products and services to ordinary people.  Being able to navigate this area of law is important for any attorney whose clients have a presence in the consumer marketplace, whether those clients are businesses, regulators, or consumers.  Students will learn consumer law by examining how it impacts many of the services and transactions that have become central to the lives of most consumers, including the purchase of homes and cars, the purchase of smaller-ticket consumer products, the use of bank accounts and electronic payment services to manage money, and the use of credit (including credit cards, student loans, home loans, car loans, and payday loans) to meet personal and family needs.  In the end, students should come away with an understanding of the origins and purposes of consumer law, and an appreciation of how its ever-expanding compliance requirements and consumer remedies have become, to the consumer marketplace, every bit as important as the law of contracts and torts. Three hours. Not offered in 2019-2020.
