FREN 341 - La France de l’Ancien Régime

Prerequisite: Three courses in French at the 200 level. Readings in French literature and civilization from before the Revolution of 1789. May be repeated for degree credit if the topic is different.

Winter 2019, FREN 341-01: Introduction à la légende arthurienne (3). Prerequisite: three FREN courses at the 200 level. An introduction to the Arthurian narrative tradition of the medieval francophone world. Students examine the origin and development of Arthur and the knights of the round table, the manuscript tradition in which these legends are transmitted, the concept of le merveilleux, and the role beasts and monsters play in the textual fabric of Arthurian material. Texts include works by Chrétien de Troyes, Marie de France, and other anonymous stories involving Camelot and Arthur’s court. The main objectives of this course are to improve students’ reading fluency in French and to give students an understanding of medieval culture, history, and civilization through literature.
