LAW 409 - Special Education Law.

Special education law refers to the laws and regulations that govern the teaching of students with special needs. Federal law, specifically the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA) guarantees a free public education to those who suffer from a hearing, speech, or visual impairment, a brain injury or mental impairment, serious emotional or health issues, autism, or an identifiable learning disability. This class will explore the practical interplay between federal and state laws and regulations, the rights of parents and students, and the obligations of public educators. By focusing on hypothetical case studies and the different challenges presented in meeting the “individual” needs of students across a wide spectrum of disorders, the class will prepare its members to assist either parents or educators in negotiating the maze of special education laws and regulations. Two hours.NelsonNot offered in 2009-10.
