CHEM 399 - Advanced Topics in Chemistry and Biochemistry Credits: (3 credits in fall or winter, 4 in spring)
Prerequisite: CHEM 242 or instructor consent. Studies of advanced topics. May be repeated for degree credit if the topics are different.
Fall 2016, CHEM 399A-01: Advanced Topics in Chemistry and Biochemistry: Mechanisms of Cancer (3). Prerequisite: CHEM 341 or instructor consent. An advanced study of the underlying biochemical mechanisms that lead to cancer formation. Specific topics include DNA replication and the cell cycle, cell signaling pathways, genetic instability and DNA repair, apoptosis and cell death, and regulation of gene expression. This course also explores current cancer treatments and therapeutics, and employs a heavy emphasis on the current primary literature. LaRiviere.
