Winter 2017, FREN 343-01: La France à travers les siècles: le récit court (3). Prerequisites: 3 French courses at the 200-level. Readings in French literature and civilization from across the centuries. May be repeated for degree credit if the topic is different. Topic for Winter 2017: Selected French tales and short stories from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century. Through readings that acquaint students with some of the better-known French authors (Marie de France, Perrault, Balzac, Mérimée, Flaubert, Maupassant, Le Clézio, Tournier, Yourcenar, etc.), this course explores the themes and techniques of the short narrative, and its relation to the cultural and historical context. Emphasis on close reading of texts and development of all communications skills. (HL) Frégnac-Clave.
