SPAN 205 - Spanish for Healthcare Professionals

Prerequisite: SPAN 162, 164 or equivalent. This course is for students with an advanced intermediate level of Spanish who are considering professions relating to healthcare including physicians, nurses, physical therapists, paramedics, firefighters, law enforcement, health policy, workers, medical attorneys, and hospital administrators. The course emphasizes oral comprehension while examining a diversity of factors influencing the health of Hispanic patients. A primary goal is to learn to conduct a complete medical interview in Spanish via a blend of readings, discussions, films, role-playing, and writing assignments. Students develop their ability to read, write, and converse in Spanish using information and vocabulary pertaining to the medical sciences and healthcare, and they gain cultural awareness and insights into Hispanic peoples and cultures.
