FREN 343 - La France à travers les siècles

Prerequisite: Three courses at the 200 level. Readings in French literature and civilization from across the centuries. May be repeated for degree credit if the topic is different.

Winter 2016, FREN 343-01: La France à travers les siècles: L’Autre (3). Prerequisites: Three 200-level French courses. In this course, we examine representations of the Other in texts ranging from the Middle Ages to the present and what they reveal about their time and society. Readings include literary texts – 12th- to 20th-century short stories and excerpts from longer texts, Laurent Gaudé’s 2006 novel Eldorado – films, excerpt of texts from other disciplines such as history, sociology, psychology, medicine, and law, and press articles. Emphasis is on close reading of these texts, and on use of French for further development of all communications skills. (HL) Frégnac-Clave.
