CHEM 298 - Special Topics in Chemistry

Prerequisite: Vary with topic. Three-credit studies of special topics. May be repeated for degree credit if the topics are different. Possible topics include RNA biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, and atmospheric chemistry and the environment.

Fall 2015, CHEM 298-01: Special Topics in Chemistry: Mechanisms of Cancer (3). Prerequisite: CHEM 341 or BIOL 215, or instructor consent. An advanced study of the underlying biochemical mechanisms that lead to cancer formation. Specific topics include DNA replication and the cell cycle, signaling pathways, genetic instability and DNA repair, apoptosis and cell death, and regulation of gene expression. This course also explores current cancer treatments and therapeutics, and employs a heavy emphasis on the current primary literature. Friend, LaRiviere.
