FDR: HA
Credits: 3 in fall or winter, 4 in spring

Winter, 2016: ARTH 394-01: Currents in Nigerian Art, 1900-Present (3). Prerequisites: Three credits in art history and instructor consent. This seminar investigates currents in Nigerian art, beginning from the early 20th century when Aina Onabolu subverted colonial authority by producing works in a European realist style. It then follows the trajectory of modern art, addressing the use of “synthesis” to convey various interrelated concepts such as pan-Africanism and nationalism, and concludes with an examination of contemporary art on the global stage in the early 21st century. Students engage themes such as modernism, nationalism, postcolonialism, globalization, transnationalism, diaspora, and cosmopolitanism and become familiar with the individual artists, scholars, curators, and collectors who have shaped the history. (HA) Sytsma. Planned Offering: Fall, Winter, Spring
