SPAN 392 - Spanish Language Theory and Practice

Credits: 3
Planned Offering: Fall, Winter

Prerequisite: SPAN 215 or SPAN 275 and three credits at the 200-level. A topics course that approaches language study through theories of language use and meaning, as well as their practical application through extensive writing exercises. Topics may include translation theory, analysis of theoretical approaches to language study, and advanced grammar. May be repeated for degree credit if the topics are different.

Winter 2014 Topics:

SPAN 392: Spanish Language Theory and Practice: Language and Power (3). Prerequisite: SPAN 215 or 275. This course explores different theoretical approaches to account for the relationship of language and power, and therefore the relationship between language use and social processes. In particular, it observes how meaning is constructed and reconstructed in discourse, especially by the dominant classes with access to public discourse: politicians, academics, journalists, etc., whose messages generally reach and influence large audiences. For this reason, political discourse is an important source of data to observe how social actors employ specific linguistic choices to achieve political goals. Reyes.

SPAN 392: Creative Writing Workshop (3). Prerequisite: SPAN 215 or SPAN 275 and three credits at the 200-level. This course is designed to improve students’ abilities to analyze the craft of writing and to practice the craft in several genres (short story, poetry, drama) in the Spanish language. Using the close reading of great works of Hispanic literature in these genres, students learn to translate literary text and to create literature of their own. Requirements include literary translations, an annotated anthology of creative works from our reading, a final portfolio of the students’ creative works, active classroom/workshop participation, and attendance at a reading by a creative writer.

Fall 2013 Topic:

SPAN 392: Spanish Language Theory and Practice: Advanced Grammar in Spanish, a Linguistic Approach (3). Prerequisites: SPAN 275 and three additional 200-level SPAN credits. This course explores language use in different genres (journalistic, literary, political) from a Functional Grammar perspective. The linguistic analysis of this course focuses on areas of Spanish grammar that are problematic for non-native speakers of Spanish. Reyes.
