Prerequisites: FREN 273. This course gives students a general knowledge of the evolution of French literature and ideas over the centuries through the study of a single genre, its styles and techniques. Recent offerings include: L’Essai de Montaigne Camus; Ecriture feminine/Ecriture féministe? L’amour dans la poésie lyrique; Le conte et la nouvelle.

Topic for Winter 2013:

FREN 332 : Etudes de genre: Le conte et la nouvelle (3). Prerequisite: FREN 273 or instructor consent. A study of selected short stories from French literature from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Through readings that acquaint students with some of the better-known French authors (Marie de France, Perrault, Balzac, Mérimée, Flaubert, Maupassant, Le Clézio, Tournier, Yourcenar, etc…), this course explores the themes and techniques of the short narrative, and its relation to the cultural and historical context.
