HIST 269: Seminar in American History: The First Four Presidents (3). This seminar examines the lives and times of the first four presidents of the United States – George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. It focuses on the presidencies of the four men but also explores their lives both before and after their administrations, examining their preparation for holding the office, their elections, their strengths and weaknesses, their successes and failures, and their contributions to the development of the office. Students read extensively in both primary and secondary sources, discuss their reading in class, and write essays on topics assigned by the professor. (HU) Merchant.
