Planned Offering: Offered when interest is expressed and departmental resources permit.

Prerequisite: Instructor consent. The title, term of meeting, and credits for seminars is announced to all geology majors in advance of registration. May be repeated for degree credit if the topics are different.

Topic for Winter 2012:

GEOL 395: Seminar: Orogenic plateaus (1).. In this seminar, we survey the current state-of-knowledge regarding the tectonic feature orogenic plateaus, relatively flat regions with high elevations in excess of 3000 meters. We investigate the structure, formation, and destruction of orogenic plateaus, as well as study modern tools used to reconstruct paleoelevation. We consider both modern and ancient examples, including the Tibetan Plateau of the Himalaya, the Altiplano-Puna Plateau of the Andes, and the hypothesized late Cretaceous “Nevadaplano” plateau of the American west. Weekly readings are from the primary literature. Rahl, Harbor. Staff.
