ARTH 180 - FS: First-Year Seminar

First-year seminar. Prerequisite: First-year standing. Winter 2016, ARTH 180-01: FS: Portraits, Politics, and Propaganda (3). First-year seminar. Prerequisite: Open to first-year students only.  In this seminar, students examine the most common form of self-commemoration – the portrait – from a variety of intellectual perspectives. Motives for commissions, specific themes, and symbolic messages, and even stylistic choices are addressed as we trace the evolution of this highly charged art form from its origins in Antiquity through the modern period and the development of the camera. (HA) Bent. Planned Offering: Offered occasionally. Each first-year seminar topic is approved by the Dean of The College and the Committee on Courses and Degrees. Applicability to FDRs and other requirements varies.
