Topic in Winter, 2010:

FREN 332: Études de genre: L’Essai (3). The great Renaissance writer Michel de Montaigne is often credited with inventing the essay. This course gives students a general knowledge of the evolution of French and Francophone literature and ideas over the centuries through the study of one literary genre, in this case the essay. We study an overview of literary and political movements and debates from Montaigne in the Renaissance through Césaire and Camus in the 20th century. We read different types of essays from the reflective to the critical to the polemical and discuss principles of style and rhetoric in our analysis of the essays. The class is conducted in French and most of the class time is devoted to discussion. Students give presentations in class, write critical papers, and attempt to imitate the style of some of the texts (un pastiche). This class helps students improve their writing skills.
